🧭 Diagnostic method: freeze-frame & live data
- Read DTCs and freeze frames : rpm, load, speed, air/water/oil temperatures, manifold pressure/boost. Understand where and when the error occurs.
- Compare live data : Target vs Actual (boost/VVT), STFT/LTFT (fuel trims), MAP/MAF , lambda , misfire counters.
- Direct tests : intake smoke test, fuel pressure check, petrol↔LPG switching tests (if present), solenoid valve/actuator actuations.
- “One cause at a time” rule : isolate air, fuel, ignition, then mechanics (compression, timing).
⚠️ P0299 — Underboost
What is it?
Actual boost pressure is consistently below the target for a certain period. The control unit enters recovery mode and reduces torque.
Symptoms
- Poor thrust, especially between 2,000–3,500 rpm; “soft” overtaking.
- Check engine light; sometimes whistling or bleeping when accelerating.
Probable causes
- Air leaks : hoses, intercooler, clamps, throttle body.
- Wastegate/actuator stuck, control solenoid valve faulty.
- Worn turbine /excessive play; poor oil supply.
- Inaccurate MAF/MAP (false readings) or clogged exhaust.
Rapid diagnosis
- Log boost 1,500→4,000 rpm (3rd/4th): Actual must follow Target with minimal delay.
- Smoke test intake; visual inspection of intercooler/hoses.
- Wastegate actuator : check stroke and solenoid valve control.
- Oil check : specification/pressure; turbo delivery check.
Intervention
- Restore air line sealing (sleeves, intercooler, clamps).
- Repair/replace wastegate/solenoid if loose or stuck.
- Turbine : if there is play/leaks → new/overhauled unit + oil circuit flushing and priming .

⚠️ P0171 / P0172 — Lean / Rich Mix
What is it?
The fuel trimmers (STFT/LTFT) remain out of range: P0171 = lean (extra air), P0172 = rich (extra fuel).
Symptoms
- Jerking, irregular idling, abnormal fuel consumption; possible gasoline smell.
Probable causes
- Post-MAF air leaks (lean), MAF dirty/off-scale.
- Low/high fuel pressure ; dirty or dripping injectors.
- EVAP purge valve stuck open; slow/biased lambda sensor.
- On LPG systems: unstable rail/reducer , saturated filters.
Rapid diagnosis
- STFT/LTFT : normal within ±5-10%. Above ±15% → certain anomaly.
- Smoke test (for P0171), MAF cleaning/plausibility test.
- Fuel pressure at idle/load; EVAP activating.
- Test petrol↔LPG to isolate the circuit (if present).
Intervention
- Restore intake seal ; clean/replace MAF .
- Adjust/replace pump/regulator , check injectors.
- On LPG : new filters, reducer pressure control, efficient rail.

⚠️ P0300 – P030x — Misfire
What is it?
P0300 = random misfire; P0301-P030x = cylinder-specific. The control unit records misfires by measuring torque irregularities.
Symptoms
- Vibrations, gaps, flashing light when accelerating; smell of unburned gasoline.
Probable causes
- Ignition : worn spark plugs, faulty coils, wiring.
- Fuel : dirty injectors, low pressure.
- Suction / vacuum: localized leaks (cylinder).
- Mechanics : low compression, valves, timing, EGR.
Rapid diagnosis
- Misfire counter at idle and under load, then coil/injector swap → does the fault follow the component?
- Compression and, if necessary, leak-down .
- Check power and ground on coils/injectors.
Intervention
- Correct spark plug kit + any faulty coil .
- Injector cleaning/reconditioning; fuel pressure restoration.
- If mechanical: reset valve timing , check EGR.

⚠️ P0106 — MAP sensor “Range/Performance”
What is it?
The ECU detects that the MAP (manifold pressure) signal is not consistent with TPS/RPM or barometric pressure .
Symptoms
- Unstable idle, slow response to throttle, abnormal fuel consumption.
Probable causes
- Dirty/faulty MAP ; cracked/clogged vacuum tube.
- 5V reference / ground faulty, oxidized connector.
- Intake leak or dirty throttle (plausibility wrong).
Rapid diagnosis
- KOEO (ignition on, engine off): MAP ≈ barometric.
- At minimum : stable value; snap-throttle = ready change.
- Check 5V ref/ground pin; inspect tubes and collector.
Intervention
- Cleaning/replacing MAP and restoring vacuum tubes.
- Check wiring/grounds; clean throttle body.
⚠️ P2195 / P2196 — Lambda “stuck” lean / rich (bank 1, sensor 1)
What is it?
The upstream probe no longer switches: it remains “stuck” on lean ( P2195 ) or rich ( P2196 ), distorting the carburetion.
Symptoms
- High fuel consumption or “exhausted” engine; mixture warning lights and correctors out of range.
Probable causes
- Slow/exhausted O2 probe ; inefficient heater.
- Exhaust leak before the probe (false air).
- Really lean/rich mixtures (upstream causes: air leaks, injectors, pressure).
Rapid diagnosis
- Test response : induce rich (fuel spray) / lean (small air intake) and observe if the probe switches.
- Check exhaust leaks (blowing noises, black marks).
- Check probe heater (absorption, power supply).
Intervention
- Replace slow/blocked lambda probe ; repair exhaust leaks.
- Resolve causes of abnormal mixture ( air/fuel ) before replacement.
📊 Quick Table: DTC → Test → Action
| Code | Key test | Typical intervention |
|---|---|---|
| P0299 | Log boost Target/Actual; smoke test; wastegate actuator | Air seal restoration; actuator; turbine/oil |
| P0171 / P0172 | STFT/LTFT; MAF; fuel pressure; EVAP | Leak repair; MAF; pump/regulator; LPG filters/rails |
| P0300–P030x | Misfire counters; coil/injector swap; compression/leak-down | Spark plugs/coils; injectors; valve timing |
| P0106 | KOEO = MAP≈BARO; snap-throttle; 5V ref/ground; tubes | Clean/replace MAP; hoses; throttle; wiring |
| P2195 / P2196 | Induced rich/lean test; exhaust leaks; heater probe | New probe; repair exhaust; correct mixtures |
Guideline values: STFT/LTFT within ±5-10% are generally normal; above ±15% indicates a persistent fault. Actual values depend on engine/altitude/temperature.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clear the DTCs and continue using the car?
You can delete them for verification, but if the cause is not resolved, they will return. If the light is flashing (serious misfire) , avoid driving : you risk damaging the catalytic converter and engine.
MAF or MAP? How do I know who's lying about airflow and oxygen sensors?
Compare plausibility : MAP to KOEO ≈ BARO; it should be stable at idle. If the trimmers are out of range but the air sensors are plausible, first check for intake leaks and fuel pressure.
A single DTC or multiple codes at once: where do I start?
Follow the causal chain : P0299 (air) can lead to P0171 (lean), which can generate P0300 (misfire) and then P2195 (lean lambda). First repair the source (air/boost leak), then reset and try again.
LPG: Why do I only have gas codes and not petrol codes?
If the correctors are normal on petrol but not on LPG, the cause is often in the gas system (filters, reducer pressure, rail, calibration). Proceed with dedicated tests and scheduled maintenance.
What “good” values should we look for in live data?
STFT/LTFT ±5-10% at cruise are ok; MAP stable at idle, responsive to snap; Actual boost close to Target; upstream lambda switching regularly into closed-loop.
